Let’s face it we all have those busy days were we have a million things going and need a snack, and that bag of potato chips would really hit the spot, right?! I travel a lot, and one of my biggest challenges is which gas-station-snack to pick from.
The truth is tho, that no matter how busy we think we are this stuff adds up and soon enough we start to feel groggy and brain dead. Our energy goes down as well as our productivity and we don’t feel the ambition we used to. I honestly believe that the way we care for our bodies has a lot to do with it.
Instead of picking up a junk-food option here are a few snacks that can be found about anywhere and will help to fuel your brainpower:
- Fresh Fruits and Berries
- Pumpkin Seeds
- Kale Chips
- Whole Grains
There are actually quite a few healthy choices such as The KIND brand granola bars which contain both pumpkin seeds, whole grains and often nuts or berries. Even just a good ole trail mix is a great choice. Cheese sticks and whole grain crackers are good too.
Let’s talk about drinks. Sugary drinks especially soda, that are made up of basically sugar, water and artificial flavors are the worst way to treat this incredible body that we have. According to research sugar is responsible for most cases of dementia and alzheimers. It also says that substituting sugar for artificial sweeteners isn’t much different in the outcome.
We heard in nutrition class that our brain needs sugar right? It does. It needs healthy sugar such as fruit and fruit juice. There are many vegetables as well that provide healthy sugars such as carrot and beet.
By choosing drinks like the NAKED brand that provides blended fruits and veggies in a delicious drink, or tea sweetened with organic sugar, and my fav is coconut water with pineapple, we are still able to enjoy ourselves and nourish our most precious body part, our brain, as well.
Here is a little video by Devin Burke describing the nutrition needs for our brain:
